THE ROAD SO FAR...
CASTIEL is the new god. He has personally taken it upon himself to destroy all of the nonbelievers. He has become corrupt with power, due to the poor souls of purgatory. The angels have willingly and practically, without a choice, turned power over to Cas, in fear that he will dispose of them just as he had almost effortlessly put an end to Raphael.
While retreiving the souls, you could say that Castiel had been a bit lazy, and hadn't realized what he had released while opening purgatory. A century's old demon, named OCTAVIUS, who has more power than anything Sam and Dean have ever faced. He has been wreaking havoc all over the United States, destroying anything and everything that stands in his way. Why is he doing these things? Mostly just because he can, because it's been a while since he's been out purgatory.
SAM and DEAN don't know that this has happened. They are both too confused at the loss of whom they considered family, though they try to carry on with their lives. Dean is the most hurt; he was the closest out of the two to Castiel, and to see him spiral like that killed him inside. They are sure that there will be a confrontation between them, but they are unsure of when this will occur. A century's old demon is the least of their problems at the moment.
Other HUNTERS are beginning to notice the strange disappearances and unworldly storms caused by Octavius. They are beginning to band together, or at least, the ones who aren't arrogant enough to take him on their selves are, in hopes to work together in order to bring down the century's old demon. Even though it seems like there is never truly a period of peace in this world.
